Digital Printing for Custom Apparel

Our Direct-to-Film (DTF) digital printing process produces vibrant, full-color designs with no minimum order and works on virtually any fabric.

Athens Print Shop uses Direct-to-Film (DTF) technology for our Digital Printing service. Your design is printed onto a special transfer film, coated with adhesive powder, and heat-pressed onto the garment. Because the design is printed digitally, full-color photographs, gradients, and fine detail are all possible. Digital Printing also has no minimum order quantity, making it ideal for small runs, samples, and single custom shirts.

How Digital Printing Works

The DTF process starts with your digital artwork. The design is printed in full color onto a PET transfer film using specialized water-based ink. A layer of hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, then the film is cured. During application, the transfer is placed on the garment and pressed with a heat press at around 320°F for 15-20 seconds. The film is peeled away, leaving the full-color design bonded to the fabric. The result is a soft, flexible, durable print that stretches with the garment.

When to Choose Digital Printing

DTF is the best choice for orders under 24 pieces, designs with smooth gradients or full-color photographic detail, designs with more than 6 colors, and garments that can't be screen printed (like pants and shorts). DTF is also ideal when you need a single custom shirt or a small batch of samples before committing to a larger screen printing run. Because there are no per-color screens to prepare, DTF is more economical than screen printing for small quantities.

Digital Printing vs Screen Printing

The key difference is how each method builds color: screen printing uses a physical screen for each color, while DTF prints digitally in a single pass. This means DTF is cheaper for small orders and screen printing is cheaper for large orders. Screen printing produces slightly more vibrant, opaque prints (especially white on dark garments), while DTF handles complex, multi-color artwork that screen printing cannot. Athens Print Shop offers both and recommends the best method automatically based on your design and quantity.

Digital Print Quality and Durability

Modern DTF prints are highly durable — they withstand 100+ washes without significant fading or cracking. The prints are soft and flexible, with a slight texture that becomes less noticeable after the first wash. DTF adheres to cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, and even 100% polyester performance fabrics, making it the most versatile printing method available.
